We are proud to have Dr. Toru Mihara and Dr. Satu Limaye provide an update on the developments in Washington State and Japan's relationship.

Our seminar topics are the following: 

Integrated Resorts

On July 20, the Japanese government completed their legislative project to bring casinos to Japan, facing down political and public opposition.  The Integrated Resorts Implementation Bill was voted into law by the upper house of parliament squeaking in ahead of the end of the Diet Session that concluded two days later.  Professor Mihara, was one of eight people on Prime Minister Abe’s IR committee and will speak to the economic impact and huge opportunities for Japan and U.S. businesses. 

Japan Matters in Washington State

The latest data on the influence of Japanese trade within Washington State will be the topic of Japan Matters in Washington State. The East West Center in Washington, D.C. has refreshed their data for Washington State.  Dr. Satu Limaye, can also speak to Japan’s changing role with the U.S. and within Asia in addition to speaking to Japanese business locally.


About the speakers:

Dr. Toru Mihara is the director of the Center for Amusement Industry Studies at the Osaka University of Commerce. He helped draft the legislature that legalized integrated resorts in Japan this year. 



Dr. Satu Limaye is Director of the East-West Center in Washington. He is also a Senior Advisor at the CNA Corporation, a non-profit research and analysis organization located in Arlington, VA. He is the creator and director of the Asia Matters for America initiative, an interactive resource for credible, non-partisan information, graphics, analysis and news on US-Asia Pacific relations and the national, state and local levels; Founding Editor of the Asia-Pacific Bulletin series, an editor of the journal Global Asia and on the international advisory council of the journal Contemporary Southeast Asia.
